runner

with a reputation

for eluding recess duty aides

dodging custodians

climbing the chain-link

breaking out

 

fast, wiry boy

who could scale a fence

drop on the other side

to continue his sprint

through the staff  parking lot

 

I chased him once

but he outran me easily

yards ahead, gaining distance

just a fuzzy dot down the road

wheezing, I watched

him continue his journey

 

sometimes he made it home

or stopped by Albertson’s

to enjoy his brief independence

before his eventual police car ride
