excerpt from:

"Fourth Quarter: Reflections of a Cranky Old Man

by Carlos E. Cortés

The Boy with the Backward Baseball Cap

I knew it was impending

There was nothing I could say

I saw disaster coming

One hundred feet away

His baseball cap turned backward

His pants down to his thighs

His mesmerizing smartphone

Was the focus of his eyes

No sense of where he’s walking

No idea where he was

His mind is on his smartphone

No matter what he does

“Distracted walking encounter”

Is what they call it now

Disease of modern living

It’s presence makes me vow

 That I will pay attention

I’ll always stay aware

Of everything around me

‘Cause life just isn’t fair
